Havens Winery Bourriquot Napa Valley Red Wine 2013

Havens Winery Bourriquot Napa Valley Red Wine 2013

Havens Winery was founded in 1984, capitalizing on the richly diversified Napa Valley microclimates, and utilizing traditional methods, to produce Merlot, Syrah, and Bourriquot, a Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend modeled after Chateau Cheval Blanc. Smith-Anderson Wine Group, with 30 years' experience producing quality wines, acquired Havens in 2010, introducing Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay to the repertoire.

The classic label remains the same, as does the exceptional quality of these wines. Vineyards traverse the Napa Valley, from Carneros to Howell Mountain, utilizing exceptional grapes from illustrious vineyards, such as Stagecoach Vineyard. The current Havens focus is creating exquisite red blends possessing elegant characteristics, balanced flavors and smooth, satisfying finishes on the palate. These wines are currently available in the Smith-Anderson Tasting Room, along with other brands and varietals, in downtown Napa.

The Vineyard and Winemaking: The 2012 Napa Valley Bourriquot grapes came from the Wastlhuber Vineyard in the Vaca Hills, east of the City of Napa. The soils in these areas are volcanic and gravel based, covered by silty-loam deposits from the hillsides. It is these rocky soils that give the wine its characteristic dark color and fruit forward flavors and aromas. The Cabernet  Franc and Merlot bring distinctive fruit flavors and structure to the wine. The grapes were gently crushed and fermented in stainless steel, with three punch-downs per day. The fermentation temperature was kept at 80° Fahrenheit. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation in the tank, and then was barreled down in combination of French and American Oak barrels.

Growing Season: The 2012 growing season has been exceptional, the moderate weather throughout the growing season has put little pressure on the vines, and provided grapes with well-balanced chemistries. The 2012 harvest is making up for the low yielding 2011 crush, with most varieties picking at above average yields. The 2012 harvest is shaping up to be one that will become known for its abundance of fruit and quality of wines.

Tasting Notes: The 2012 Napa Valley Bourriquot is a fine example of the wines produced from hillside vineyards in the cooler southern part of the Napa Valley. Black cherry and blackberry aromas are integrated with subtle hints of vanilla and toasted oak. The flavors emphasize the black fruit aromas with well balanced oak tannins that develop a rich full mouthfeel. Both the aromas and flavors carryover into a long lingering finish. You will find this a very elegant and satisfying wine.
