Havens Winery Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Havens Winery was founded in 1984, capitalizing on the richly diversified Napa Valley microclimates, and utilizing traditional methods, to produce Merlot, Syrah, and Bourriquot, a Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend modeled after Chateau Cheval Blanc. Smith-Anderson Wine Group, with 30 years' experience producing quality wines, acquired Havens in 2010, introducing Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay to the repertoire.

The classic label remains the same, as does the exceptional quality of these wines. Vineyards traverse the Napa Valley, from Carneros to Howell Mountain, utilizing exceptional grapes from illustrious vineyards, such as Stagecoach Vineyard. The current Havens focus is creating exquisite red blends possessing elegant characteristics, balanced flavors and smooth, satisfying finishes on the palate. These wines are currently available in the Smith-Anderson Tasting Room, along with other brands and varietals, in downtown Napa.

The Vineyard and Winemaking: The 2011 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of grapes from the Napa Valley. The gravely loam soils derived from the volcanic hillsides are well drained and allow for the vines balanced growth.

The grapes were gently crushed and were cold soaked for 48 hours prior to yeast addition to start the fermentation. After fermentation, the wine remained on the skins for 2 weeks, and then pressed off. The wine was then barreled down in a combination of French and American Oak barrels. 

Growing Season: 2011 was another cool growing season. December was very wet, with January very dry and warm. La Niña brought more late-winter rains and spring showers through the end of June. The rainfall total for 2011 concluded at 125% of normal. Two weeks of summer heat at the end of September led to the harvest of the first Cabernet grapes on October 13. With a rainy forecast, vineyard crews worked to open up the canopy with leaf removal for airflow and sun exposure in early October. However, skies cleared during the last 3 weeks of October, providing long stretches of dry weather to fully ripen the Syrah lots (clones: Durrell 174, 383, 470, & 525) and final Cabernet ones.

Tasting Notes: The 2011 Napa Valley, Cabernet Suavignon is an extremely well balanced wine. The fruit and wood components are completely integrated, leading to a complex and beguiling aromas and bright rich flavors of black cherry, blackberries, vanilla and toast wood. These characteristics linger on the palate inviting another sip.
