Koo Loo Loo means “bird” in the Maidu Native American language, symbolizing peace and purity in their culture. The Sutter Buttes of California were once the home of Native Americans who epitomized the concept of “organic” by leaving no lasting impact on the land. The smallest mountain range in the world, the Sutter Buttes today are a small collection of ancient volcanic cones in the middle of California, scores of miles from any other mountains or hills. The vines are grown on these volcanic slopes, producing 100% organic Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes of outstanding quality and flavor. Koo Loo Loo Old Vine Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon present lovely, balanced flavors from the volcanic soil, and contain lower levels of sulfites. Leaving behind a smaller organic footprint, Koo Loo Loo brand wines are better for the environment and better for your health. Organic Grape Growing: The organic process is one which uses no synthetic chemicals, such as herbicides and pesticides. Weeds are controlled by the use of sheep and goats, who also fertilize the soil as they consume weeds. Tilling the weeds under the soil is another organic method to eliminate them from vine rows. Plant diseases such as powdery mildew are controlled by using naturally harmless sulfur dust. Birds and small animals that might be tempted to eat the delicious fruit are kept at bay by falcons that are brought into the habitat to scare them away. Maintaining a certification of Organic fruit requires an increased attentiveness by the farmer, resulting in higher quality fruit than from conventionally grown grapes. “It was the Indians’ way to pass through a country without disturbing anything; to pass and leave no trace, like a fish through water or the birds through the air.” Willa Cather
