Magnolia Hill Zinfandel Amador County 2013

Magnolia Hill Zinfandel Amador County 2013

The Vineyard and Winemaking: Amador County has a huge diversity of soils and is as warm as Napa, to the west, though the higher elevation means breezier days and cooler nights. The Zinfandel for this wine came from a vineyard near the Renwood vineyard just off Highway 49 near the town of Plymouth. It is predominately planted with the Grandpere clone of Zinfandel in both head trained and trellised vines. The slope of the vineyard has shallow soils with good drainage, and is mostly granitic with lots of iron that gives it a red color. Many of the vines in the area are 75 years old or older. It is this older type of vine that gives the Zinfandel its unique depth of color, flavor and aromas of cherry, strawberry, and hints of plum, rasberry and spice. The wine was barrel aged for only 6 months to create soft tannins without overwhelming it with too much oak flavor and aroma.

Tasting Notes: The 2013 Magnolia Hill Zinfandel delivers its classic Zinfandel characteristics in an Amador style. Tasty cherry flavors, nuances of vanilla and oak resonate with plum, raspberry and spice flavors. The finish is a pleasing echo of the palate. It is versatile with for a variety of food from cheese and grilled meats, to fish and barbeque. It can also be served lightly chilled for those hot summery days.
