Havens Winery Black and Blue, Red Wine, Napa Valley 2016 NEW

Havens Winery Black and Blue, Red Wine, Napa Valley 2016 NEW

Havens Winery was founded in 1984, capitalizing on the richly diversified Napa Valley microclimates, and utilizing traditional methods, to produce Merlot, Syrah, and Bourriquot, a Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend modeled after Chateau Cheval Blanc. Smith-Anderson Wine Group, with 30 years' experience producing quality wines, acquired Havens in 2010, introducing Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay to the repertoire.

The classic label remains the same, as does the exceptional quality of these wines. Vineyards traverse the Napa Valley, from Carneros to Howell Mountain, utilizing exceptional grapes from illustrious vineyards, such as Stagecoach Vineyard. The current Havens focus is creating exquisite red blends possessing elegant characteristics, balanced flavors and smooth, satisfying finishes on the palate. These wines are currently available in the Smith-Anderson Tasting Room, along with other brands and varietals, in downtown Napa.

The 2014 Havens Napa Valley Black & Blue is a seductive blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The intense Syrah is sourced mostly from the rocky ash and basalt soils of Mt. Veeder while Cabernet grapes were grown in well-drained alluvial and sandstone soils along the valley floor. The contrasting soil conditions balance each other beautifully. Frequent pumpovers and separate fermentation allowed the each compenent to fully develop before our winemaker deftly selected the ideal blend. Deep, ripe blackberry flavors fill the palate. The Black & Blue’s lingering finish make it a perfect companion for hearty, cold weather fare.

Growing Season: Though the drought caused yields in the Napa Valley to dip somewhat in 2016, the smaller clusters and berries of that harvest meant high skin-to-juice ratios, resulting in intensely con- centrated fruit flavors. The balanced weather throughout the summer, with warm days and cool nights, contributed further and we are seeing exceptional character as the wines go into bottle. Color is deep, and the wines are intensely structural and concentrated.
