Havens Winery Cabernet Sauvignon, Spring Mountain 2014

Havens Winery was founded in 1984, capitalizing on the richly diversified Napa Valley microclimates, and utilizing traditional methods, to produce Merlot, Syrah, and Bourriquot, a Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend modeled after Chateau Cheval Blanc. Smith-Anderson Wine Group, with 30 years' experience producing quality wines, acquired Havens in 2010, introducing Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay to the repertoire.

The classic label remains the same, as does the exceptional quality of these wines. Vineyards traverse the Napa Valley, from Carneros to Howell Mountain, utilizing exceptional grapes from illustrious vineyards, such as Stagecoach Vineyard. The current Havens focus is creating exquisite red blends possessing elegant characteristics, balanced flavors and smooth, satisfying finishes on the palate. These wines are currently available in the Smith-Anderson Tasting Room, along with other brands and varietals, in downtown Napa.

The Vineyard and Winemaking:

The Havens 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Spring Mtn. comes from grapes grown near the Ballard vineyard, located high above the Napa Valley on the summit of Spring Mountain. This Napa AVA straddles the northern and eastern slopes of the Mayacamas mountain range on the valley’s western border. The combination of low vigor soils with high winter rainfalls, with an elevation above the fog line on the valley floor and warm nighttime harvest temperatures, produces a highly variable, yet unique environment for premium wine grape growing within the Napa Valley AVA. The Ballard vineyard exemplifies the attributes of Spring mountain vineyards that are known for their lower grape yields and wines with intense varietal fruit character, dark color, intense varietal fruit flavors and aromas; and finally complex grape tannins with a softness that differentiate them from the wines of other appellations in the premium wine producing world. The volcanic soils together with Spring Mountain’s particular microclimate make this rugged area an optimal place for the cultivation of Cabernet grapes.

The grapes were destemmed and crushed, and fermented in stainless steel tanks for nearly three weeks. Fermentation temperatures were kept at a stable 80° F. The wine completed Malo-Lactic fermentation in tank, and after draining and pressing was barreled down into French Oak barrels (60% new) for 20 months.

Growing Season:

The 2014 growing season was exceptional; the moderate weather throughout the growing season put little pressure on the vines, and provided grapes with well-balanced chemistries. The 2014 harvest continues to make up for the low yielding 2012 crush, with most varieties picking at above average yields. The 2014 harvest is shaping up to be one that will become known for record-breaking abundance of fruit and quality of wines.

Tasting Notes:

The 2014 Havens Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich, enticing wine with a deep ruby-purple color. Aromas of dried herb, olive, mint, and anise rise from the glass with a core of ripe, dark berry fruit flavors joining in on the palate. Elegant yet complex, this wine completely captivates your attention.
